When I came to college I told myself that I would never join a sorority. Frankly, constantly being surrounded by girls is a pretty terrifying idea when you grew up with brothers.
One of the main reasons I chose Ohio University was for the Marching 110. I had always loved watching them perform. It's an eye-opening experience to see a group of 200+ people who all love what they do, and are really great at it too. After getting into the flow of college, I started to hear a little bit about Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi. Those two organizations do a ton for the Marching 110. They provide us with practice shirts, blacks shirts and shorts to wear under our uniforms, and our band jackets. At the time, my big in band, Katie, was the Vice President of Sisterhood of the Tau Beta Sigma chapter at Ohio University. Also, a lot of the mellophones (my section) were in TBS too. Briefly I considered joining because I knew a lot of the sisters already. However, I still decided to convince myself that I did not want to rush TBS.
After the Marching 110 season was over, TBS began having more prerushes, due to all of the free time everyone had. The only one I went to was Game Night. It was a great experience! I honestly have no idea what game we played, but the important part is that I loved getting to bond more with the people I already knew and meet even more band nerds. However, I still was not super convinced to rush TBS. The Vice President of Membership, Kane, was trying so hard to get me to join. Every chance he got, he brought up TBS and told me how great of an organization it was. I did not finally decide to rush until the last minute.
Shortly before Formal Rush, my good friend Meghan told me that she was planning on rushing TBS. So, I decided to attend Formal Rush. It's so much easier to do something new with a good friend; at least then you are in it together. Formal Rush was an amazing experience. I loved hearing all about what Tau Beta Sigma does for the bands, the school of music, and the community. After that night, I wanted nothing more than to be given a bid.
A few days later, I was watching The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with a bunch of friends. Then, out of no where, a huge group of sisters came into the room to present me my bid. I was ecstatic and I could not wait to learn more about the sisterhood. I have always loved serving the community in any way I can. I'm so glad that I joined Tau Beta Sigma. It is one of the best decisions I have made through out my college career. Sunday is my favorite day of the week because I get to see my sisters. My sisters have been my support system through all of the ups and downs. They are my family and I know I can count on them for anything.
It's a little crazy to think that the only reason I rushed TBS in the first place was because a friend told me she was rushing.
